Honoring César Chávez’s legacy for economic & social justice

March 21, 2024

Throughout the week of March 25, we will join community leaders, union members, and many others across Colorado in celebrating César Chávez Day on Sunday, March 31. This commemorative holiday recognizes the legacy of the national labor and civil rights activist on his birthday and promotes community service in honor of the Chicano and Mexican American efforts for labor rights.

Born to immigrant laborers, Chávez’s early life experiences with farm work, poverty, and racism shaped his ideology – and led to him becoming the face and voice of the 1960s labor movement. Alongside Dolores Huerta, he co-founded the National Farm Workers Association, which later merged with another organization to become the United Farm Workers labor union. Known for leading non-violent boycotts and strikes, Chávez fought for the rights and dignity of hardworking people in America

Here’s how you can observe in meaningful ways:

  • Reflect & celebrate: Join us for the USDA’s virtual celebration for César Chávez Day on Thursday, March 28, at 11:30 a.m. MST. Take a moment to reflect on how labor and civil rights activism has impacted your life and community. And consider how you can contribute to positive change within your own community.

  • Expand your knowledge: Educate yourself and others about César Chávez’s life, work, and contributions. Read about farm workers’ rights and the struggles faced by agricultural laborers.

  • Engage in your community: Participate in activities that promote social justice, equity, and community empowerment. Consider opportunities for community service like supporting and volunteering at a local farm, food pantry or food bank, or other organization. Advocate for food justice in honor Chávez’s mission.
