Healthy drinks with children’s meals in Denver

April 4, 2024

Denver City Council recently passed an ordinance requiring Denver restaurants to offer water or milk as the default drink options on kids’ menus. Similar policies that encourage healthy eating and reduced consumption of sugary drinks are already in place in Lafayette, Longmont, and Golden. If signed by Mayor Johnson, the ordinance will go into effect beginning July 2024.

In late 2023, the Blueprint’s State Policy Committee was one of the organizations that endorsed the Healthy Drinks in Kids’ Meals strategy, expressing support for the recommendation to ensure the automatic beverage on children’s menus is a healthy one. This effort is led by the Healthy Beverage Partnership, a collaboration of local public health agencies and community partners to reduce the prevalence of chronic diseases and address health inequities by supporting municipal-level sugary drink reduction policies across Colorado.
